2021 SCSO Young Performers Scholarship Competition Scholarship Winners

Kallen Hanzsek-Brill

Oboe

A 16 year-old and a junior at St. Cloud Apollo High School. He has been studying the oboe under Brendon Bushman for the last two years and playing the oboe in the Symphonic Band and the saxophone in the Jazz Band at Apollo under the direction of George Zahn. Kallen is captain of the boys’ swim team, a member of the cross country team, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and is involved in community service through the Young People’s Collective. He plans on continued study with the oboe throughout high school and college.

Carter Scheele

Viola

Carter studies viola with David Arnott and will be graduating from Saint John’s University this May. Carter began his musical experience as a violin student of Kara Mather, and within a few years began dabbling with the viola. Carter later studied violin and viola with Steve Eckblad, and at age seventeen became a member of the Saint Cloud Symphony Orchestra. Carter plays with the Amadeus Chamber Symphony and various music ensembles in college. Carter is an avid Nordic skier during the winter and is employed as a wildland firefighter in the western U.S. during the summer.

Thomas Stang

Piano

A 14-year-old homeschooler. He began taking piano lessons at the age of 6. At the age of 9, he began studying with Dr. Paul Wirth and currently studies with Dr. Chris Weldon. He enjoys fishing, skiing, mechanical engineering, and wood working. He plans to attend college and earn a degree in music studies.

Eleanor Melton

Piano

Eleanor is graduating in May 2021 from the University of Minnesota Morris with her B.A. in music performance. She began taking piano lessons at age five and studied under Dr. Ann DuHamel during her undergraduate career. After graduating she plans to teach piano in the Red Wing area, where she currently lives with her husband. Outside of music, her interests include literature, languages, and gardening.
